What is the Automated External Defibrillator
The automated external defibrillator is a life saving medical device with a light and easy to use design designed to deliver an electrical shock (defibrillation) to a patient in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Automatic defibrillators are designed to be used by anyone even those individuals who haven’t had medical training. You cannot harm the patient who is already dead.
Automated external defibrillators (AED) have advanced ECG analysis software, the device analyzes the ECG signal and guides the user through the use of audible and visual systems. Therefore, the user doesn’t need to know the heart rhythm interpretation.
Early defibrillation is the only treatment for sudden cardiac arrest and may enable the heartbeat to start again and to maintain circulation which can help towards saving a life.
In some developed countries, it is compulsory to make an automated external defibrillator available and make it easy to access as the AED is placed within public areas such as stadiums, shopping malls, and airports. Look out for them the next time you pass through an airport.
